Our region is one of the most important wetlands in Europe. It grows as an area by filling the two mythical rivers Evinos and Acheloos. The Messolonghi lagoon – Aitoliko with the Polynesian morphology and the mountain (Arakynthos) with the unique oak and chestnut forests are an ideal destination for nature lovers. In this landscape the hundreds of species that are hosted, form the ecosystem of life.
Mankind created culture in our region since the prehistory, the ancient cities of Plevrona, Calydon and Oiniades with the principles of equality before the law of the Aetolian League.
The Sacred City of Messolonghi, the most densely populated Mediterranean island Aetoliko, the villages of Neohori Katochi, and Lesini (next to River Acheloos) and Evinochori, Galatas, and Krioneri (next to River Evinos).
An important role of the region’s cities and especially of the Sacred City of Messolonghi in Modern History, was the Heroic Exodus of the Free Besieged.
In the area, tours of mills and wineries and other tasting activities take place all year round.
Aetoliko is the most populated island of Greece, and it’s especially graphic character makes it a beautiful destination to spend a day near Messolonghi and deal with art, religious tradition, tasting and the experience of horse riding.
