The natural hot spring from of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity, the Three Holy – Entities) is located near the historical small island of Kleisova. Over there, for centuries and all year round, thousands of Greeks take a refreshing and therapeutic thermal mud bath. The concentrated salt as well as the iodine which are contained in the water and the mud at the bottom, have the ability to cure major diseases. These Spas are located in Finikia, known as “White Salt Lake.”

The evaluation with questionnaires lasted for four months and it included questions about pain, functionality of each joint and the overall clinical picture of the patient. In this research it was examined whether using marine mud patches (mud bath) had any improvement on the symptoms of osteoarthritis. The conclusions can be safely drawn from applying patches of mud, is that this treatment is quite effective in dealing with symptoms of osteoarthritis in most of the major joints of the body. In all the joints that were examined, there was significant improvement in functionality and the level of pain felt by the patient.

These results were maintained for at least four months after initiation of treatment, the amount of time it was needed for the evaluation. The mechanism of action of this treatment remains unknown and by reviewing the international literature it appears that the beneficial effects of the mud patches are due to multifactorial mechanisms. The study was published in the scientific journal “Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics” and it was also presented at the 21st National Physiotherapy Conference, held in Athens in November 2011. Also, according to another study, the mud and water of this region is rich in many chemical elements such as silver, boron, copper, gallium, lithium, manganese, rubidium, selenium, zinc, phosphorus, chromium, nickel, titanium, gold, antimony and others.
